Ginger is possibly the best loved and revered herb in the Ayurvedic tradition. It is known as a universal medicine because it is good for all three doshas and for many conditions. Not only is it an extremely valuable herb in the medicine cabinet, but it is also very tasty in the kitchen in so many recipes. One of my favourite things to do with ginger is to make a tea. It’s so easy and it is such a great way to start the day.
To brew a cup of ginger tea, simply bring some water to boil and add some sliced ginger to the pan. Simmer it for about 10 minutes, strain, pour and enjoy. You can drink it just like that, or you can add a cinnamon stick and maybe a few fennel seeds and a crushed cardamom pod. Mostly I like to just drink it as it is.
Ginger supports the digestive fire, or the agni, and this has a lot of positive health benefits. A strong agni helps to clear ama that has accumulated. Clearing the ama helps to maintain healthy joints, better absorption, assimilation and digestion and therefore immunity. This gives you more energy, vitality, strength, and sattva or joy. In addition, ginger is great for the respiratory system, so taking it regularly can really help to support your lungs and breathing, especially in winter.
Other benefits of ginger include:
relieving nausea including travel sickness
reducing inflammation
improving circulation
helps with period cramps
stress relief
It is very warming and nurturing, with a lovely kick and it’s just a great way to start the day. Try adding ginger tea just after you drink warm water in the morning. This helps to kickstart your agni before you start eating breakfast.
Cheers, to your very good health!
