Learning to meditate is an important part of adopting an Ayurvedic lifestyle. Not only are there so many benefits cited in the ancient Ayurvedic texts, but there is also a plethora of very well documented scientific evidence and thousands of anecdotal stories extolling the virtues of meditation. From my own experience, it really is a most wonderful part of the day once you get the hang of it and it is totally life-changing. The important thing is to make it part of the routine and you will soon see radical changes in your body and mind. Some of the reported benefits include:
An increased sense of joy, love, peace and compassion
An increase in self-esteem
Reduced stress and anxiety
Increased ability to concentrate
Increase in self-awareness
Help to overcome addictions
Increased self-control
Improved sleep
There are lots of different techniques and some people get quite dogmatic about ‘the right way to do it’ or how long to do it for. However, I think that whatever it takes to get you to your meditation cushion is the right way for you. I also think it’s best to start with a tiny, manageable block of time and make it a daily habit. Once you have established the routine, you can increase the time if you want to.
I know that my life flows so much better when I’m in the regular practice of meditating. Most of the Ayurvedic teachers that I have studied have all said the same thing, first thing in the morning at “brahma muhurta” is the best time to do it. This is followed closely by last thing at night.
I can promise you, that once you get the hang of it and make it part of your life, you will experience profound changes. So as I always say… try it and see how it feels! Namaste :)
